Legal Answers Online

Mass Legal Answers Online is a Massachusetts Law Reform Institute program in cooperation with the Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Not able to volunteer with VLP at one of our many clinics but still want to get involved? Volunteering with Mass Legal Answers Online allows attorneys to answer legal questions anytime, anywhere.

About the Program:

Mass Legal Answers Online is a virtual legal advice clinic part of the American Bar Association’s Free Legal Answers project. Launched in 2016, this secure Question and Answer website allows low-income Massachusetts residents to post their legal questions and allows volunteer attorneys to answer them.
How it Works:
  • Clients post a legal question, and volunteer attorneys can choose the question(s) they want to answer – at any time from any location.
  • The clients have been informed the services provided through this program are limited in scope. The clients know in advance that the attorney’s assistance is restricted to answering their specific legal question and that the attorney will not represent the client in court nor draft any pleadings.
  • Attorneys are not required to commit a certain amount of time to this program, although attorneys are encouraged to answer at least one legal question per month.
  • Opportunities to volunteer with this program are open to all attorneys licensed to practice law in Massachusetts and are a member of the Bar in good standing. This program is also open to those attorneys registered for pro bono status with the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers, including in-house counsel and retired attorneys.
  • Malpractice insurance coverage is provided to all volunteer attorneys who are providing legal guidance through the Mass Legal Answers Program website.
